Articles and Information

Someday
by Erin Pavlina

Someday I want to walk into an all-vegan Costco, where I can buy tofu in bulk, 10 bars of vegan soap for half the regular price, and Soy Delicious ice cream in five gallon tubs. The food demonstrators will ask if I want to try their breaded tofu, gourmet vegan cookies, and new vegan cheese spread on crackers. And the bakery will serve enormous vegan cakes with white fluffy frosting and pink flowers that cost only $5.00 and can feed a small army.

Someday I want to drop my children off at school knowing that at lunchtime they'll have to decide between the veggie burger, the vegan pizza, the bean tacos, or the salad bar.

Someday I want to pay 55 cents for a vegan donut, 59 cents for a vegan candy bar, and I want to buy a vegan cheesecake for $14.95 and complain about how expensive that seems.

Someday I want to walk into a mainstream supermarket and order faux meat and vegan cheese by the slice at their in-store deli. I want to pick up one of their pre-made pizzas made with two kinds of vegan cheese. I want to stop by the in-store bakery and buy a dozen cute little cupcakes with plastic pumpkins in them for a Halloween party. And I want to browse the ice cream aisle which is filled with 15 different brands of vegan ice cream and novelty products and it takes me more than 30 seconds to decide what to buy.

Someday I want to drive through a fast food restaurant and pick up a veggie burger, fries, and soy milkshake for my kids, and I want it to cost $2.99 plus tax.

Someday I want to go to Las Vegas and stand in a long line so I can get an all-you-can-eat vegan buffet for only $12.95. And I want it to take me 20 minutes to fill my plate ... the first time.

Someday I want it to take more than a couple of minutes to decide where to go out to dinner in our neighborhood.

Someday I want to order anything on a menu in any restaurant without having to play 20 questions with the waiter.

Someday I want to go to family holiday dinner and not have to bring my own meal.

Someday I want to send my children to a birthday party with only a present in their hands; no frozen pizza, chocolate cupcake, or tupperware full of vegan ice cream.

Someday I want to comfort my children who overhear tales of a time when animals were kept in cages and people bought tickets to stare at them and reassure them that this is no longer done.

Someday I want to take my children to a circus where the only performers are humans.

Someday I want to read my children bedtime stories where animals are treated with compassion and the people in the books are eating tempeh and drinking rice milk.

Someday I want to go to a big toy store and buy my children a grocery shopping cart where the fake plastic items they can buy are blocks of tofu, containers of rice milk, and there isn't an egg carton in sight.

Someday I want the world to be vegan. Call me a dreamer if you like, call me unrealistic, but I truly believe it will all happen. Someday.
