6 Reasons Why Vegans Should Blog
By Kumudha Venkatesan
According to Webster's, a blog is a web site that
contains an online personal journal with reflections,
comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer.
Today thousands of people are blogging about subjects
which they are passionate about. Blogging is a wonderful platform to interact and discuss with people across the globe and it can have an
enormous impact.
According to recent surveys the number of vegetarians and
vegans are increasing. I
strongly feel that the internet has played a key role in
this increase. With
a click of a button it is now possible to find
thousands of vegan recipes and vegan friendly restaurants. With
numerous vegan websites and forums, you can discuss everything from vegan recipes to vegan
cleaning products with fellow vegans, even if they
are located thousands of miles away.
Blogging is a wonderful tool to
spread veganism. Blogging about your vegan lifestyle
accompanied by a couple of pictures is a great way to
promote vegan lifestyle to internet surfers, friends
and family.
I think our world would be a better place to live in if
more people lead a vegan lifestyle. For some reason, people tend to feel that it is very difficult if not impossible to lead a vegan lifestyle. Blogging is a great way to show people that it
is indeed possible to lead a life which causes minimal
suffering to the animals, guiding people to the numerous companies which don't use animal testing and animal products in everyday
items.
You don't have to have knowledge about programming and
design skills to blog. Blogging is as easy as 1-2-3.
There are a couple of websites where you can
blog. However, www.blogger.com is a very popular
website for blogging. Go to www.blogger.com, follow the steps listed on "Create a blog in 3 easy steps"
and you are all set to start blogging! You can blog daily if you want, but blogging twice or once in a week is also perfectly acceptable.
Of course, you want people to visit your blog and read your entries. Most blogging sites have built-in comments feature for readers of your blog to post a note.
If you don't see comments, it does not mean that people
have not read your blog. If you want comments on your
blog, it is a good idea to visit other food blogs or
vegan blogs and leave a comment on their blog.
Make sure that you are signed in to your account, while
commenting on other blogs, so that it will be easy for
others to visit your blog with just a click on
your name (the name used to sign your blog posts).
Here are six reasons to blog:
- Food: When you utter the word "vegan" people often
assume you thrive on raw salads and fruits. They
wonder what you eat every day. If you have kids, the
grandparents are worried about the vegan diet of their
grandchildren. Posting pictures of your children's meals is a nice
way to let your family know the wide variety of food
they enjoy being a vegan. And with a digital camera
it is really a snap to upload and post pictures online.
My mother started to worry when I told her that I was
a vegan. She was very concerned about by
health. Now I reassure her by blogging about
all the yummy foods I enjoy being a vegan. My
mother no longer worries about my vegan diet. She lives in India but visits my blog regularly and views the delicious foods that I enjoy while being a vegan in United States.
- Product Reviews: With the increase in demand for
vegan products, supermarkets these days are brimming
with new vegan items. Writing about the
products which you find useful is a great way to
entice people to try vegan items. These days I'm discovering so many wonderful vegan
products, by visiting vegan blogs.
- Restaurant Reviews: Before traveling
to a new city or country I always make sure to visit
www.happycow.net, and www.vegdining.com to find
vegan-friendly restaurants. These are great websites to find vegan and
vegetarian fare. However, since the number of
vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurants are
relatively less in number, it would be very useful
for vegans if vegans blog about vegetarian and vegan
friendly restaurants.
- Vegan Fashion: Once I became a vegan, I really had
no problems in finding vegan food items in the
supermarkets. I really panicked when I started looking
for new shoes. I was
thrilled to see http://veganfashionblog.com, which
keeps me abreast of the latest vegan fashion. If you
come across great vegan fashion products, please blog about
it!
- Enticing Non-vegans: People feel that it is very
challenging and daunting to practice veganism.
Blogging is a great way to entice non-vegans to prove
that it is really not that very difficult to lead a
vegan lifestyle. For a couple of years I
wanted to become a vegan. But somehow I assumed that
I would have a very limited food options, even though
I came across wonderful vegan websites brimming with
wonderful articles, tips and recipes. Everything changed when I started reading some vegan
blogs. I was thrilled when I saw vegans whipping up
delicious vegan recipes almost every day. I came
across blogs such as
http://veganlunchbox.blogspot.com. I realized
that it is possible to be a vegan and and also enjoy
lots of great food at the same time. I now regulary
visit http://urbanvegan.blogspot.com ,
http://blog.fatfreevegan.com, http://www.vivelevegan.blogspot.com to know
everything about new vegan products, vegan recipes,
vegan restaurants and cool tips.
- Veganizing Dishes: I love Indian
sweets. Unfortunately they are loaded with milk and
ghee (clarified butter). I am unable to eat my favorite
sweets at Indian restaurants. I now veganize my
favorite sweets. I recently made mysore pak, a popular
Indian sweet using vegetable oil instead of
ghee. I was so happy when some of
the readers of my blog wanted to try that recipe.
I'm now inspired to post many veganized version of
Indian sweets.
Editor's note: Check out VeganBean.com, a fairly new vegan blog on the block containing news, cooking info and recipes, animal rights issues, videos, vegan goodies, and more. Their goal is to help educate the public on veganism and important issues within the movement.
