Question:

I recently decided to go vegan but really miss one of my favorite foods.....vegetarian corndogs. Do you happen to know how to make them?

Answer:

The corn dog, a popular "fair food", is nothing more than a hot dog, dipped in a thick cornbread type of batter, and then deep-fried. You could make them from scratch, it's not too difficult. I personally don't have a corn dog recipe but I found one on the Web at www.ichef.com by searching for "corn dog." Check it out with the following recommendations for substitutions:

  • use Ener-G Egg Replacer and water instead of the egg in the recipe
  • use veggie hot dogs instead of beef frankfurters
  • use unbleached cane sugar for the white sugar
  • use soy or other non-dairy milk for the cow's milk
  • use safflower or olive oil for the melted shortening
I know there are various frozen corn dogs on the market made by Morning Star, Loma Linda, and Natural Touch. I know for a fact that the Morning Star brand has eggs but I don't know about the ingredients in the other brands. Feel free to contact the companies directly for info. All three companies are owned by Worthington Foods, so all three brands may be made in the same manner, therefore containing eggs. I know that you can purchase them through the Web so try a little searching at http://www.wfds.com, http://www.kelloggs.com, or at http://www.nomeat.com for product info and availability. Good luck with it!
