Book ReviewGreat Healthy Food for Vegetarian Kidsby Nicola Graimes Review by Jake Aryeh Marcus Great Healthy Food for Vegetarian Kids is a good idea for a cook book. Not only does it have sturdy pages and attractive pictures, but the recipes are arranged both by meal and by age of child. The dishes tend to be attractive and to use creative presentation to help deal with the "I won't eat that, it looks funny" problem that so often arises feeding vegetarian children.
Nicola Graimes, a prominent British author of books about vegetarianism and editor for the British Vegetarian Society, also includes nutritional details on each recipe at the back of the book. While her introductory section contains some helpful information about foods to be wary of as potential allergy risks for children as well as a discussion of the appropriate ages at which to introduce certain foods, Graimes adds dairy products to a child's diet as early as six months. For a vegan child, obviously diary would not be added at all but for others current research indicates that children should not consume cow's milk products before the age of one. With the reservation that Graimes is not sufficiently cautious in her advice concerning dairy and nuts, Great Healthy Food for Vegetarian Kids is a useful and attractive book of meal ideas. |
