Book ReviewSimply Veganby Debra Wasserman Review by Erin Pavlina Simply Vegan is one of our favorite cookbooks for several reasons. As its title promises, the recipes in this book are easy to make and require few ingredients. Unlike some vegan recipes that call for hard to find ingredients, most recipes in Simply Vegan require only common fruits, vegetables, and seasonings. Some of our favorites recipes from this book include curried chickpeas, oriental-style green beans, seasoned rice, broiled herbed tomatoes, and festive cashew cookies. Our only complaint is that a few recipes produced very bland results, and sometimes we found it necessary to alter a recipe to reach the desired consistency.
With only the first half the book dedicated to recipes, Simply Vegan is as much a nutrition guide as it is a cookbook. The second half of the book contains a great deal of nutritional information, a food glossary, and special advice for pregnancy and childhood needs. We especially enjoyed learning the origins of many fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices. Did you know that bananas originated over 4000 years ago in Malaysia, or that there are about 7500 different types of apples? As one of the few vegan cookbooks available, Simply Vegan is a great addition to any vegan kitchen. |
