Book ReviewTable for Two: Meat and Dairy Free Recipes for Twoby Joanne Stepaniak Review by Rebecca Hess Lately it seems as though every recipe I've tried has produced enough food to feed a small army. Even when utilizing leftovers, it gets pretty boring to eat the same casserole night after night. Most often I prepare new recipes for myself (my very picky boyfriend indulges me every so often), so you can imagine how relieved I was to receive Table for Two. Along with her recipes Stepaniak offers ideas on how to stock a pantry for two, cooking tips for small portion cooking, an ingredients glossary, and kid pleasing recipes. All recipes in this book utilize few ingredients and little time, making it a natural choice for any of us looking for healthy, delicious food that doesn't take hours to prepare.
Table for Two will get you through the whole day with ideas for every meal, and every time in between. Each recipe includes the yield of how much food it will result in, which I found extremely helpful. I found that most of these recipes will produce enough for two full portions (depending on how hungry you are). Also, most of the recipes take under 30 minutes to prepare. My favorite part of the book was the "Cook's Notes" and "Cook's Secrets" at the end of many recipes. Many friends of the author contributed to this book and they add their extremely helpful hints generously. They are very proud of their recipes and were gracious enough to share their tips and findings with all of us. I found many satisfying, delicious comfort foods in this book. Mushroom Barley Chowder, Tempeh Sloppy Joes, and Baked Macaroni and Vegetables Casserole are some of my new staples from this book. The recipes are very clear and easy to follow. I often find myself pulling out this book numerous times throughout the week. I have also found that if I am cooking for a larger group, most recipes are easily doubled or tripled. Many recipes I have tried in the past from other cookbooks were difficult to divide in order to prepare only one or two portions. Table for Two is perfect for those of us looking to prepare delicious, satisfying, quality food for ourselves or our loved one. I am sure you will find many new favorites in the pages of this book. |
