Book ReviewThe Vegetarian Family Cookbookby Nava Atlas Review by Jennifer Santoyo The latest from Nava Atlas, The Vegetarian Family Cookbook is perfect for those growing tired of the same recipes every week. Atlas includes many “old favorites” as well as a wide variety of unique recipes. To start, the author gives tips to busy cooks, reasons to go vegetarian, and information about chemicals in our food. One section that caught my attention was the note that advised that any recipes in the book that call for mayonnaise refer to soy mayonnaise and that if one prefers to use conventional mayo, the nutritional information for that recipe will change. This is a welcome change from the average cookbook, and caters to both the vegetarian and vegan diet, or those just looking to cook a delicious family meal.
The book also includes breakfast ideas, as well as cooking tips in an easy-to-follow format. Recipes include Banana Fritters, Nutty Chocolate-Banana Smoothies, Tofu and Potato Hash Browns, and even Homemade Seitan, just to name a few. There is also a section on how to roll veggie “sushi”, and an impressive array of muffin recipes. I couldn’t set this book aside without trying the Veggie Pot Pie. It was reminiscent of my mother’s pot pie that I haven’t had in years. This made a very filling dinner, with potatoes, onion, carrots, buttery-tasting pie crust and spices. Another recipe that went over well is the Sweet Baked Cereal Mix. It is a very simple recipe, but with a great assortment of flavors that you can adjust to your liking. Once again, Nava Atlas has created a jam-packed compilation of vegetarian goodness. |
