Book ReviewNew Vegetarian Babyby Sharon K. Yntema and Christine H. Beard Review by Erin Pavlina When I first heard this book had been released I was very excited to read it. It promised a nice section on vegan pregnancy and raising your kids as vegans. Though I was pleased with the information the book provided, I did have some issues with it.
Article continues below The first sections of the book are enough to scare any parent who isn't prepared to raise their child as a vegan. The authors cover in minute detail exactly what nutrients your child needs and how to get them. This, in and of itself, is not a problem. But it can make anyone nervous that their child will not get the nutrients they need to stay healthy. Keeping track of their magnesium, B-12, phosphorus, chloride, etc. is enough to make someone neurotic. The information is useful, but I didn't like the overly scientific way it was presented. The rest of the book was much better. The authors cover what to feed your child at each stage of development, how to prepare baby food, some good recipes to use, and a question and answer section. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes on raising her children that Sharon included throughout the book. I highly recommend reading this book. Just plug away at the first few sections and keep them handy as a reference tool. No need to obsess over every vitamin, amino acid, and mineral. The rest of the book is wonderful! |
