Why isn't VegFamily a print magazine? Why is it online only?
I get asked this question so often that I decided to just answer it here so everyone would know.
A few years ago we considered turning VegFamily into a print magazine, but decided against it mainly because the costs would skyrocket and there was no guarantee of success. The benefits of being an online-only format are tremendous. Here are the benefits of keeping VegFamily an online-only magazine:
- No printing costs. No paper equals no printing costs.
- No subscription fee. If we were a print magazine you'd be paying $20 a year to read it.
- Archived articles. You can read every article ever written anytime you log on. If we were a print magazine, you'd have to order back issues (if we had any left) in order to read an article you were interested in.
- No space limitations. If we were a paper magazine we would have to limit the sizes of articles and have a lot more advertising. Online formats allow us to publish content that is longer than we could in a print format.
- Dynamic content. We can offer message boards and playgroup listings that you will have access to 24 hours a day. Not possible with a print format.
- International appeal. It would be cost prohibitive to ship a magazine to other countries, but with an online-only format, people in Africa can read the same articles as people in the States, for free.
