What options are there for vegans who don't wish to breastfeed? - Jennifer

Jennifer,

I strongly encourage vegan mothers to breastfeed their babies for a minimum of one year, and longer if it is mutually agreeable to both mother and baby. Breastmilk is by far the most nutritious food for your infant. Even though formulas will sustain a baby's life, they pale in comparison to the outstanding benefits of giving your child breastmilk.

However, there are many reasons why a mother chooses not to breastfeed her baby, or cannot breastfeed. In those cases, I recommend that women give their babies soy formula for the first year. Currently in America there are no completely vegan soy formulas. However, the only non-vegan ingredient is usually vitamin D3, which is derived from sheep, so only a miniscule amount of this non-vegan ingredient is present. This is a far better option than using a dairy-based formula or trying to make your own formula (not recommended!). Buy organic soy formula if you can.

If you're not sure if breastfeeding is right for you, I urge you contact a La Leche League leader or member in your area (or on the internet). A lactation consultant may also be helpful. There are books and websites, too, that will teach you how to breastfeed and show you how to make it a comfortable and enjoyable experience for you both.

I breastfed my daughter for 7 months, but my son is 14 months and he still enjoys breastfeeding. I feel absolutely wonderful knowing he's getting nature's perfect food.
