We're trying to go 100% organic (not quite there yet!), but this website has some good info on most-highly and least-highly contaminated produce (although I don't think they've heard of kale or collards! and appear to ignore GMO's as corn is in the least-highly contaminated group)...

We buy organic whenever we can, but somethings can't be found organic. I wish everything would be, as it should be! I can't believe some people think eating organic is weird, or even bad for people!! This is the way it originally was! Really, how is pesticides and GE good but naturally organic bad??? People like that confuse me. Anyway...I'm starting a rant here that could go on...I'll just shut up now! :p Thanks for the link.

I hear ya, Sylver. I could get up on my soapbox too on this one, big time. For instance: in this online group I belong to one of the members was talking about a TV show they saw recently. I'm not sure what sort of show it is since we don't watch TV. Apparently, on this show it was stated in no uncertain terms that if we all ate organic, thousands of people would starve all over the world. I would have laughed if he (and a few other easily misled people) weren't taking it so seriously.

However, they didn't have much to say when I pointed out that people are starving all over the place already.

My husband and I eat about 90-95% organic. We are blessed to be part of a wonderful little co-op within walking distance of our home where we can get a wide variety of produce even in the offseason, though we do pay through the nose for most of it in winter. There was a time when we couldn't afford to eat much organic food and I thank my lucky stars every day that we can afford it now.

Unfortuantely my husband and I can't afford to by any organic produce; the only time we get organic products is if we splurge for some prepared vegan foods at the HFS or the co-op. I am lucky though because my teaching mentor has an organic garden so he often gives me veggies. I can't wait for the day that I can buy all organic and nonGMO foods.

I would love to eat all organic, but I can't do it for a few reasons. First, I cannot afford it right now. I just bought a house and I've got all those bills to pay. Second, althought Syracuse, NY is really vegetarian/vegan friendly, I think we only have a few health food stores. The main one that I go to (which is once a month since its kinda far from me) does not have organic produce, just the canned and frozen stuff that even the mainstream stores sell now. And with me never being home now with my new job, I know that if I bought a lot of fresh orgainic stuff it would go bad since I am never home to eat it.

i can't afford to go organic yet either unfortunately but have wanted to for a year or so now :(
i live in a small city where there's only one health food store and only one grocery store with much in the way of vegan and organic options. so they mark up the prices way higher than in bigger cities i've been to. but any organic produce i have tried in the past has just tasted so much better so i'm anxious to get my financial stuff settled so i can have a higher budget for this sort of thing.

by the way i'm new, hi!

It's funny you should mention how much better it tastes than conventional produce, veegan-vaygan. We've been eating organic so dedicatedly for so long that when I tried some non-organic salad the other day at a party I was shocked! It was virtually flavorless.

Now I understand why all the conventional produce eaters rave about my veggie trays at winter holiday parties. Here I was thinking they were just weird...

When my daughter was in kindergarten, they were learning about apples and part of the lesson was to eat different varieties of apples. One of the apples she ate at school was a red delicious, and the next day at home she had the same apple only organic. She said to me: "Mom, why does this apple taste good but the same apple at school taste yuck?" I explained that the apple at home was organic and it didn't have pesticiedes on it to keep bugs and other animals away from it, and the apple at school had the pesticides.
Take Care!

I can't get fresh organic produce on my budget ($20 a week for groceries) and the supermarkets price their organic produce sky high... but when i can afford it, i'll buy Waitrose organic frozen mixed veg and 'Tender Harvest' Organic baby food, i really like eating baby food for some reason...guess i'm just weird. That about sums up my comsumption of organic food...lol...

Sylver, loved your story! Our local grocery had a sale on fresh <conventional> pineapple recently - $.99 each! I couldn't resist, so I bought one. After sampling it and not liking it, 4yo ds asked if it was organic. When I said no, he said "get organic next time; it'll taste better"!
