Have you guys seen the ad for the Soy Delicious ice cream social? I want to make sure you are all getting in on this.
Soy Delicious is offering to send free ice cream to your child's school. I signed up Emily's school already. Of course, I offered to help them serve all that ice cream... and I'm sure some of it will fall into my mouth. Think of it... our vegan kids can actually eat the ice cream in school one day! It's a Festivus miracle. :) And what a wonderful way to introduce the omni kids to an alternative non-dairy treat.
Anyway, let's show our support for vegan ice cream by allowing them to give us a ton of it for free. Sign up your child's school for this right away!
Go here to read the application and get details. Be sure to tell them VegFamily sent ya. :)

I passed on the info & tried to get Tessa's preschool to do it, but a bunch of the parents read the recent Mothering article on soy & won't let their kids eat any soy now.:(

Oh for pete's sake! I'm sure they have no trouble ordering pizza or eating cupcakes or something. That sucks.

But I'm sure if they had a Happy Meal party, these mindless parents would be all over it.
Or how about this: only the kids whose parents say they can have the fake ice cream can have it. then all the other kids can watch and wish they had it. it can kinda put the shoe on the other foot!

ha ha!:D I didn't even bother with Angelina's teacher since she is from a farm family in Wyoming & won't even give the kids the snacks that I send in when they ask for parents to provide snacks. Everybody else sends in jellybeans & junk; I send in dried fruit & whole wheat pretzels filled w/ pb. My snacks seem to mysteriously never get served. Oh well - maybe we'll get a more open minded teacher next year.

Christa (and other parents)--I would make sure that your teacher's superior knows that you provide healthy alternatives for snack time that are not being "sold" or promoted as the jelly beans and junk other parents bring in. Although I am a high school teacher, I cannot imagine any administrator being able to rationalize why a teacher should promote junky foods over healthy ones. Especially since there has been an effort recently to make the school foods healthier.
In regards to the soy concerned parents--what about all of those Asian kids?? They eat soy all the time and have no concerns. What about the material published about the dangers of childhood obesity? I don't see parents ignoring fast food joints or junky foods. It amazes me how many people will only have learned about one side of an issue, yet they have a concrete opinion on the issue. Half the time the authors of these articles are not accurate or slant the material. Grr.

Seems those in the anti-soy campaign front think all kinds of horrible things have been happening to Asian kids who ate soy. One woman on a soy thread at MDC got very testy about this. She posted that the entire Japanese population has been short, not because of their genes, but b/c soy has stunted their growth. According to her theory, they are now getting taller due to changes in the national diet, including cutting down on soy & eating a more Westernized diet (which, of course, we all know is so healthy  ).
When I, and others, pointed out that people worldwide are getting taller, she posted a long diatribe basically calling me an idiot & stating that she knows worlds more about Japan than I do, so I should just shut up. It was really pleasant - just kidding! I do appreciate the more reasonable discussion tone over here!

What's REALLY interesting to me is that there have been SOOOOOOO many articles about how milk is bad for you and yet they haven't stopped eating milk. But ONE badly written article about soy, and out the window it goes!
Yeesh! I work 1:1 with kids but wish I taught a regular classroom so that I could have a SOy Delicious party!

Hey, my sister eats soy like there's no tomorrow, she's definitely not stunted. She practically grew up on soy. And at the rate she's growing, she'll be six feet tall by the time she's 18. And my dad's only five ten. Sheesh, stunted by eating soy, my behind.
