My heavens!!!! Two of my closest friends have been raving about Herbivore in SF for a year. My husband and I took our son on his first camping trip, and stayed a few days in SF as well. Our friends drove up to spend the weekend with us in Frisco, and made sure we all went to Herbivore. I have to say, that if I had the money, I would fly up there JUST to eat there on a whim!!! The food was more than exquisite. I had the lentil loaf covered in a fresh beet sauce, mashed taters with mushroom gravy, sauteed organic greens with a fresh salad and crustini. For desert, I had the (my mouth is watering) chocolate cupcake. It was HUGE and in all of it's dark chocolatey goodness, the best cup cake I have ever had. I had a taste of everybody's food that night......grilled seitan sandwich, grilled eggplant sandwich with garlic aioli and sun dried tomatos.....and BBQ tempeh sandwich. 4 meals, 4 beers and 4 deserts cost us $62!!!! The atmosphere was Zen like, had that great San Francisco vibe...Reggae turned up to just the right level. Our server was from Afica, and the sweetest (stoned...wreaked of weed) guy I've ever been served by in a restaurant. If you EVER get to Frisco.....Herbivore is a MUST!!!! It's on Divisidero St.

I went to Herbivore's several years ago when I went out to SF to visit my friend David. I was out there for a week and a half and ate at Herbivore's 3 times! Plus we went to a vegan diner in Berkley one night and I had all this greasy diner food; it was awesome! For desert at Herbivore's I had the German Chocolate cake; OH MY GOODNESS! It was the best tasting cake I had ever had. I ate a ton of different foods when I went there. I tried everyone else's food practically. My taste buds are looking forward to the next time I get out to the West Coast :0)

I, myself, am not a big fan of Hernivore's lunch and dinner selections. I think they're pretty bland and I could make most of them at home.
HOWEVER
Did you know that Herbivore serves brunch 7 days a week from 9 am to 2 pm!!!! And THAT food is amazing - crepes, pancakes, french toast, corn cakes, you name it. We go every week.
When you're next in SF, make sure to give that a go. And since you like the cupcakes/cakes so much, stop by Rainbow Grocery on Fulton where you can buy them yourself (raspberry, chocolate, mocha, carrot, and vanilla cakes and cupcakes) make by Black China Bakery from Santa Cruz.

Duckie, what was the name of the vegan diner in Berkeley? I must have not eaten out enough when I was in school at Berkeley, or they have some new restaurants b/c it seems like there are more than I remember!
Anyway, I am making my list of places to eat while we are out there visiting. I don't know if we'll hit them all, but we'll try to get to as many as possible:D !

I can't really remember. I want to say Michaels but I don't know if that is right. I don't talk to my friend in SF anymore so I can't find out the name for you either. The place had an amazing array of foods: faux meats like lobster, shrimp, chicken; soy milk shakes. Lots of burgers and fries options. I think I had a BBQ "Chicken" sandwich, fries and a chocolate soy milk shake.

Pikkumyy, I honestly loved the food, and the selection. Where I live, the only vegan food we have to choose from is all Asian inspired........and it gets old!!......LOL I do enjoy it, but I wish there was an Herbivore in So Cal. There are several other restraunts to choose from in So Cal...but they are far from me. We wanted to go to Herbivore for breakfast, as I heard they whip up some mean breakfast food. We ended up getting all turned around, which you know, I'm sure, is easy to do in Frisco!!! We ended up having the most horrible over priced food, and I'm way to embarassed to even say where we ate.....it was an experience that will never be repeated!!
Anyhow......there are several other places I want to try the next time we're up there......I will post here for more suggestions when the time comes!

The diner was called MIchael's and it has been closed for over 2 years. There is a sushi restaurant in its place.
Apparently it started to go downhill and just got worse and worse until it closed.
I can see how you'd get pretty sick of only Asian food as a restaurant choice. Definitely make it for brunch the next time you're around.
I gave Christa this link - the SF Bay Area Vegetarian group has a website which now has an "Ultimate Guide" to veggie and vegan Bay Area stores, restaurants, services, etc. You can look places up by keyword, location, etc., post reviews, read reviews, etc. It's great!
