Is most or all wool from animals treated poorly, or is there some kind of "free range" wool? I'm finding it difficult to find some nice winter hiking socks.
Thanks

I'm not sure if there is free range wool. Good question. You may want to visit PETA's website and check around because they have a lot of info on this sort of thing.
Go here for a list of factsheets on their site:

There is organic wool (at least there is here in New Zealand, so I'm sure USA has it, if that's where you live), which means the animals have been treated well (as well as possible when you consider they all end up on the table) and also are not given sheep dips, which can be very toxic and stay in the wool.
