This may be a sort of strange question, but does anyone have any opinions regarding piggy banks (that are actually in the shape of pigs)? I guess I would feel a little different about them if they were in the shape of wild pigs, but these seem to be the "generic" farmed animals. Any opinions are appreciated.

I don't have a problem with a piggy bank. I don't think it harms an animal in any way.

asdflkj, is that post for real? What about carousel horses? Little kid poodle purses or Hello Kitty bags? Slippers shaped like bear's feet? Games like Hungry Hippo? Movies like Homeward Bound?
If you worry about animals, pick the ones that are real.
I'm sorry if I am misunderstanding the intent of your post, but yours seems a tad on the "troll-ish" side.

My younger dd has a piggy bank in the shape of a pig that she was given years ago for her bd. From what I can tell, she treats it like a stuffed animal -- it is a real animal to her. I figure that it can teach loving animals just like a toy animal would. We have seen "farmed" types of pigs at a farm sanctuary, as well. It is unfortunate that we have modified so many animals from their original form, but I see nothing wrong with loving them in the form they are in now as long as we are not encouraging further selective breeding to make them more profitable, or whatever, for humans.

i ,personally, think piggy banks are ok as long as you dont have to smash it with a hammer to get the money out. i can see how that could be linked to teaching violence towards animals. i hope that helps :)

Thanks for the replies! Personally, I guess I'd rather have a realistic looking pig, not one that is farmed, after some consideration. (BTW, I am no troll. Trolls have warts---all mine have left me.)

I'd be a bit worried about having a piggy bank that looked like a wild pig. Have you seen one? I think it would scare the socks off a little kid.
My daughter has many stuffed animals that are domesticated farm animals. Why? Because they are all part of her very own "Farm Sanctuary".
I think that toys like this allow our children to fall in love with domesticated animals and respect them even if they don't look like their wild cousins. And I think that is important.
This way they see these animals as living creatures deserving of respect, love and protection. Not just as something created by man our own use.
