Wouldn't it be nice if the public school system offered a vegan hot lunch? I can dream, right? Maybe, I'll write a letter. Couldn't hurt. :)

I was just thinking about this today! I have just (within the last two weeks) made the switch to vegan. My children and husband are all still meat eaters. My boys are 5 and 2 and I would like to slowly transition them and I was thinking today how much easier it would be if the school served vegan lunches. I doubt it will ever happen though because we got the new lunch menu yesterday and I noticed for the first time that the entire back of the menu is about milk and all the "wonderful" things you can do with it. Interesting.

Fear not... it could happen!

Go to www.veggieschoollunches.com to see what these wonderful people are doing (at least here in California)

I also know that Amy's Kitchen products are being test marketed in some school systems in California.

And the PCRM is working hard to get veggie school lunch options on the menu. In time, we will have it.

Erin, thank you so much for sharing that! I was hoping you would have some good news.

I'm discovering more and more, too.

For example, the great thing about Palo Alto's school system is that they've been offering these organic veggie lunches for a slightly higher price; that way parents who want the option can have it, and the school doesn't blow its budget because it's so much cheaper to buy hamburger than veggie burgers.

Even though parents have to pay a little more, I think that's a fair trade, since the food really does cost a little more.

I hope more school systems will try it. In December you'll read an interview with Barbara, the woman spearheading the Veggie School Lunch campaign here in California. I think she has a march on Sacramento planned for next year. :)

Send her some support even if you're not in California.

Thanks, I'll be waiting for the interview!
