I just read an annoying answer in the August issue of American Baby magazine - a response to someone asking if it's ok for her toddler to be vegetarian. The doctor who responded said that "if you're a strict vegetarian, you may have to give her eggs and dairy." She went on to say that iron and zinc, although present in soy and other plant foods, are more readily absorbed into the body if they come from meat. I'm hoping that parents of vegans will write to them to explain that plenty of kids are growing up vegan without any animal products to supplement their diets.
I hate that people *still* think meat/dairy/eggs are the only way to survive and raise healthy children.

I think this is one of those magazines that doesn't support breastfeeding through/past toddlerhood too. If they're so concerned about nutrients, continued breastfeeding would be the obvious solution!

you also have to look at who their advertisers are. obviously, if the people paying the majority of the bills produce animal based foods, infant formulas, etc, they wont have an article that goes against their advertisers.

good point, although if they never hear from vegan parents, they'll never change their advertising or content because they'll always assume we don't exist or are living on the fringe.
