I've been told that only a few wines are vegan.

Is this true?

I went on several wine tours in Washington and asked about their filtration, and none of them were aware of the use of gelatin or eggs as a clarifying agent.

I've seen some wines labeled organic and vegan, but is it true that as a rule wine isn't vegan?

The same goes for many English beers (Guinness, Bass Ale, etc. since they use isinglass in their beer filtration).

Yes, it's true that only some wines are vegan. Perhaps those companies were using isinglass (which comes from fish bladders) or calling their clarifying agents by another name. I have found that many companies (not just winemakers) actually have no idea what they use in their manufacturing and put in their products. Organic wines are not always vegan, but are more likely to be in my limited experience, and also their producers are more likely to know what's in them.

In Britain the Vegan Society produces a book with info about which wines etc there are vegan. I don't know of a similar list in the USA, but there may be one or more on the web, or else the British Vegan Society may be able to put you onto someone with that info (I have always found them extremely helpful).

Does anyone in Canada or the US have any suggestions on vegan wine or beer sold in North America?

Frey Vineyards sells organic vegan wines. Do a search on Google to find their website.

LOL...

Sorry Erin, how foolish of me. The LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) is basically a liquor store operated by the Ontario Government. We litteraly have dozens of them withing the city of Toronto.

Now you know ;)
