Bad news guys, Macdonald's is not going to go bankrupt any time soon, at least not in Singapore...ugh, they've come up with this local malay rice dish which has coconut rice, a piece of chicken andan egg and everyone's heading for it...and they introduced a lemon juice thing with fruit salad and mushroom soup and printed something about how they were commited to helping people live a healthy lifestyle by providing healthful food for a balanced diet...b****y hypocrites...JEEZ!

Alexis,
Companies like McDonalds don't go bankrupt all at once, they die slowly.
"REUTERS
Saturday, Jan 25, 2003,Page 10
McDonald's Corp posted its first-ever quarterly loss on Thursday as the company that popularized fast food absorbed the costs of closing hundreds of restaurants and scaled back its profit-growth targets.
The world's largest restaurant company, facing a fierce price war and changing consumer tastes in the US, said it would close an additional 517 weak-performing restaurants there and in Japan."
That's great news! They will close 517 weak-performing 'restaurants' . Remember, they have never taken a loss... except for this year. Joy oh joy.

Happy happy, joy joy!! :D
Gracious, I thought vegans were supposed to be holy saints! Guys, shouldn't you be feeling sorry for poor McDonald's? Okay, they do have an ugly reputation, brought about by a host of ugly deeds, but...ahem...where's your compassion, vegans, where's your compassion?!
LOL
Sorry...couldn't resist!! ;)

Alexis, have you been to Brindavan in Singapore? It's a vegetarian (largely vegan) Indian restaurant, and they serve the most amazing 'mutton' curry there. It's an all-you-can-eat-for-$6.50 concept, and the variety of food is astounding. The chicken rice is awesome, too, but it's not available everyday. In the evening, they also serve thick, crispy roti parathas. And I'm crazy about their sambal tofu.
Have you had the opportunity to dine there?
EricP
02-12-2003, 09:50 AM
haha. Good one Rebecca.
McDonalds should go under because of their lies and the false image they put out.
On a lighter note, McDonalds stock is ...... 10 cents down today :D

Rebecca,
In your last post "The chicken rice is awesome, too"... I'm assuming you mean mock chicken.... right?
EricP
reb_granger
02-12-2003, 10:32 AM
Yes, yes!! Hehehe!! Sorry, I should have said 'chicken' rice! :o
The real chicken rice is a local favorite - rice cooked with chicken broth (eek!) and served with a zesty chili sauce, sliced cucumber, and shredded or sliced chicken (another eek). The vegetarian version is the same, but of course without the corpse and corpse-juice. ;)
EricP
02-12-2003, 10:40 AM
Thank goodness, my mouth just about dropped, but I should have known the us vegans use the words meat, chicken, pork, beef to REALLY mean the mock mean, mock chicken, mock pork and mock beef :D

Well i've just been reading the threads and although Erins link did not come through i got the gist of things by Eric's comments--did you say 517 restaurants!! Whoo Hoo!!!:) :) :D :) :) There is some hope!! You guys are all just such nasty vegans aren't you??---this is wonderful news!! I know i am slowly wearing off on some people to at least eat some meat--my friends tell me when they try a new veggie burger and are trying to cut down for HEALTH reasons only--hey i'll take what successes i can get!!:) :)
EricP
02-12-2003, 11:06 AM
Thanks Vegmom,
I guess you COULD call me a nasty vegan, but I just really believe that Karma plays a very important role in our lives... and if what comes around goes around, McDonalds is in for a surprise.
Oh, just to let you know the 517 store closures was only the recent news. McDonalds has been cutting many stores that are "under-performing" for a while now. 517 was the largest so far because they lost money in 2002. Let's see what the future has in store ;)

Thanks, Eric. By the way, I'm really glad I had the opportunity to see that pic of your beautiful vegan baby. I was feeling a bit demoralized today, because my friend's vegetarian mom has developed a neurological problem, and the doctors are blaming it on her vegetarian diet, which supposedly lacks the minerals required for healthy brain functioning.
But your little girl and Katharina's little boy have already demonstrated that you don't need to ingest animals to be bright and beautiful!
EricP
02-12-2003, 11:38 AM
Thank Rebecca,
I'm sorry to hear about your friends mother. Was she eating a balanced vegetarian diet? Do the doctors think that it can be reversed.

I also saw the baby pictures of the healthy babies--bubbly and beautiful!!!! its nice to put faces to the people we chat with :) --Reb-- of course they would blame her condtion on her veg. diet but hopefully all works out. Anything wrong with my kids is blamed on their diet for sure. Thanks for the info. people--any other good news stories?? I just read that some scientist determined that fish in fact do not have the capacity to feel pain therefore the animal activists should let it go. Go with that....

"I just read that some scientist determined that fish in fact do not have the capacity to feel pain therefore the animal activists should let it go"
I guess they also believe that people in comas should be abused and tortured.... because they don't have the capacity to feel pain?
The "facts" just keep coming. I feel for the fish that become victims because of this "discovery".
EricP
alexis
02-12-2003, 10:27 PM
Eric, i don't believe they can actually say that? I mean it's disgusting, i know fish can feel the pain, my friends keep this huge fighting fish in a tank with a 'sucker' fish that consumes all the junk to keep the tank clean and everytime the fighting fish goes near the 'sucker' fish the thing will shoot across the tank cos it knows what's coming next....so fish don't feel any pain huh?
Reb, do you have the address to the resturant...i think i've heard of it and it sounds great, i really want to try it...but well, it's tucked in some part of singapore that i don't know very much about....sigh...
reb_granger
02-12-2003, 10:47 PM
Good point, Eric. And how dare they claim that fish do not feel pain? I took my first step to vegetarianism when I saw a group of people fishing! The doomed fishes were obviously suffering. They were flailing desperately and slowly and painfully suffocating to death. A drowning man would probably experience a similar sensation.
Regarding my friend's mother, well yeah, the doctors say that the condition is reversible - provided she starts eating meat and fish. ARE THEY BEING PAID BY THE MEAT INDUSTRY OR WHAT?? I really don't know the details (what the condition is, how it came to be, etc.), but I'll be keeping my eyes and ears open for further developments.
reb_granger
02-12-2003, 10:53 PM
Oops, I don't have the address with me right now, but I'll post it as soon as I find it.
It *is* located in a rather obscure area, but ooooh, the 'mutton' curry is to die for.
alexis
02-13-2003, 01:23 AM
thanks...it's probably somewhere in little india or something...i'll look out for it when i go there again to get my henna...
i think the doctors are not being very respectful to your friend's mom's lifestyle...i think they should seek a second opinoin...preferably with a vegetarian friendly doctor...mjost doctors have NO idea what nutrition is about all they know is that you must religiously follow the food pyramid...at least that's in my experience....
EricP
02-13-2003, 05:43 AM
Rebecca,
Alexis brought up a good point that I think your friend should think about: How much does their doctor know about a vegetarian/Vegan diet? If they don't know that you CAN survive on such a diet, do you think they can find a proper solution to her problem? I don't think so.
She should find a doctor that knows more about vegetarian diets and won't try to "cure" her by telling her to eat meat. That's totally ridiculous.

EricP

Just to add one more thing to the "fish don't feel pain" theory.
Are these the same scientists that believe that animals don't have emotions, or aren't intelligent? Or are they trying to justify why millions of helpless fish are taken from their home to be put into a Fillet-O-Fish at McDonalds?
EricP

Thanks, Eric, Alexis, and Shelley.
My friend herself is not a vegetarian, and she's basically very happy that her mom may have to start eating meat. Fits in nicely with her anti-veg agenda ("You know, you can develop a neurological disorder if you don't eat meat - just see what happened to my mom!").
I guess I'll just have to stand by and watch sadly as she buys dead animals for her mom's dinner.
reb_granger
02-13-2003, 06:40 AM
Yes, they are trying to justify the cruel but pervasive tradition of meat-eating. Or perhaps they are trying to make themselves feel less guilty about their eating habits by attempting to turn a ridiculous theory into a universal truth.
Somehow, this reminds me of Drew Barrymore. She was a committed veg*n for a long time, and suddenly she did a 180-degree turnabout, and become a meat-eater and dead-animal-wearer.
Her excuse? She wanted to have fun.
EricP
02-13-2003, 06:43 AM
That's too bad Rebecca.
You should mention to your friend that by eating meat, she's actually contributing to further health problems with her mother, such as heart disease, stroke, high-cholesterol, etc.
My 2 cents,
EricP
EricP
02-13-2003, 06:58 AM
I didn't know that about Drew
It's sad how people can change for the worse.
I will NEVER be able to eating meat again. In fact, even when I wasn't Vegan, I didn't even like meat or touch milk... and eggs, well I never touched them after my mother found BLOOD floating around in one

Read this:
Drew Barrymore's no longer a vegetarian (http://us.imdb.com/WN?20020814#4)
Scroll down to story #4.
I'd never be able to go back to eating meat, either. I admit that I indeed was a big meat-eater...but NEVER AGAIN.
Blood in eggs? Oh my god.

Actually, the docs have recommended lean meat for the mommy. And they believe that including small portions of lean meat in one's diet will not contribute to heart disease, etc.
Thanks for the suggestion, Eric. I wish I *could* do something, but I know any advice I offer is only gonna fall on deaf ears. As far as she's concerned, I'm a radical vegetarian, in any case.

That's too bad... it's in their control.
Note to doctor: Lean meat is STILL bad for your heart.

I agree with you all on the fish thing-- the headline went like thie FISH CAN'T FEEL PAIN OR FEAR, UNIVERSITY STUDY CONCLUDES from London. "Anglers rest easy. Fish can't feel pain, the largest study into piscine neurology has concluded." peta countered in the article with " We believe fishing is barbaric, of course animals can feel pain,. They have sensitivity, if only to avoid predators." Ok and on the Drew Barrymore thing that i read--so much for seeing her in Peta magazines and what kind of dumb (and i use that lightly) thing is it to say she was bored with her food and clothes??? So much for my respect for her!!

ooh yeah Eric, you're too evil, but hey, who am i to comment, i have some pretty good plans for people like that, one part of it includes a few rusty fishing hooks stuck into them...
Well, reb, as for the anti veg friend, something will happen to convince her, let's hope it's not at the expense of her mother though...once or twice i had thought that if i came down with something that'll put me in the forced meat eating position, i would just throw up violently everytime i see, smell or (god forbid) taste meat...see how they react to that.... *Evil* :D
as for eggs, after i saw pictures of chicks in eggs at about a few weeks where they are still sort of gooey and half formed, i was always afraid i'd find one egg like that...ew...
One thing, i alwayd feel so mad when i see cartons of low fat milk on sale at the supermarket and the Healthy Diet sign stamped on it...it's irritating, why don't they do the same for the rice milks and soy milks? It fustrating cos i know cows milk, no matter how low fat it can be, is anything but healthy....grrr...
EricP
02-14-2003, 05:08 AM
LOL Alexis,
I get gaggy when I smell meat :p Who wouldn't once you know what it REALLY is?
I always wondered if the "Healthy" labels are approved by anyone before they are put on milk cartons. Here in Canada we have gruesome pictures on cigarette packages with various diseases associated with tobacco... I sometimes wonder why the same labels aren't used on milk and other animal products.
On a lighter note, McDonalds stocks keep slipping. Joy!

Eric, well i don't know...we have a healthy eating program in Singapore where we are encouraged to eat healthily...the problem is that, the generally accepted information is that low-fat high calcium milk is better for you than coconut milk is...my school replaced all coconut milk used in cooking with low-fat high cal milk and it's YUCK...even for non-vegans...it's got a sweetish sickening taste...and also the lean meat thing...they say lean is better...thanks alot, but if we're so interested about the healthy eating thing, why not just go vegan???

As a matter of fact, the mommy *did* very nearly throw up when she was forced to eat her first piece of chicken today. But the daughter coaxed and inveigled her into eating it. The poor mother actually wept as she forced herself to chew the chunk of carcass.
"She has to learn," the daughter told me on the phone today, "Quite frankly speaking, Reb, I'd rather believe the doctors than believe you."
She also went on to say that I've been brainwashed by the internet. What the ****!!!
alexis
02-14-2003, 05:20 AM
oh reb, i feel sorry for that mom...it makes me feel like killing someone...kidding...but i really feel sorry for her...and no the internet has not brainwashed you...tell your friend that and very very firmly so...i can't believe this is happening...
EricP
02-14-2003, 05:35 AM
Rebecca, that's horrible! I wish you friend had more common sense
Alexis, "we have a healthy eating program in Singapore where we are encouraged to eat healthily"... I hope the coordinator of the program is aware that cows milk actually contains very little to no calcium that humans can absorb!!! Where are they getting their information from? Milk has also been proven to contribute to Osteoporosis, which is very common in the older generation.
Vegan eating is MUCH healthier for you.. that's why the average Vegan will live 13 years longer than the average carcass-eater. :D

EricP

The sad thing is, osteoporosis used to be virtually non-existent in Asian countries where dairy products do not form a part of the traditional diet. When I lived in Malaysia for a few months 1.5 years ago I was appalled at the huge advertising campaigns aimed at Asian girls and women telling them how HEALTHY dairy is for them... The country with the highest osteoporosis rate world-wide is the US and they consume the most dairy products  .
But then science or logic have never really been of *real* interest to the meat/ dairy industry...

well it is really irritating when they tell you that you HAVE to drink some disgusting milk thing cos it's 'good' for you. And the worst thing is that down here there's a general mentality of wanting the absolute best for yourself and your family, so people are so easily duped into the whole 'milk is good' thing...and you only need to add words like 'research has proven' or 'so and so health associationg reccomends doing this to mantain good health' or something just as obscure and then you'll see cartons of that stuff flying off the shelves...it's fustrating...and there used to be this program in the sixties where underweight children are given a glass of milk each day in school to help them put on weight....thank God THAT is over....
