My partner and I were watching the news last night and we were amazed to see a report about a study that showed "drinking cows milk may be linked to diabetes and heart disease", the news reporter actually said " a new study shows that milk may not actually be as good for us as we thought".... We got pretty excited about this! New Zealand has a really high rate of diabetes and heart disease so I bet this becomes big news, with lots of debate.

that is good news sophie. i wish they would
show articles like that more often on our mainstream
news here in canada. the dairy board spends a lot
of money advertising and hiring nutritionists to
push milk and cheese.

It's pretty terrible in th U.S., too. The dairy industry is very powerful. Why doesn't the fruit board, or whatever, have as much power? When I got pregnant they gave me lots of pamphlets and stuff. I was reading the nutrition one and noticed how it said that cutting dairy from your diet was dangerous. When I looked to see who put out this pamphlet, it was the dairy industry. I'm sure that people get this from their doctors and assume that it's correct; not the propaganda that it is. And all those "happy cow" comercials we get over here! I could go on and on.

Actually that's why we were amazed to see this on the news, here in New Zealand the meat and dairy board are very big also. I'm waiting for the backlash already.
There was this awful advertising campaign a couple of years ago, on TV and magazines, and huge billboards, drumming it into everyone that kids need meat to be intelligent, one of the billboards had a baby's head with "ironstein" written on it- and Einstein was actually a vegetarian!

sophie,
i was just watching the news, waiting for the us president to tell the world he really needs to have a war, anyway, they had a story about the 7-up/dr.pepper company is now marketing flavoured milk, pina colada etc., to 15 to 24 yr. olds. it's coming out in march.

Cindy- Pina Colada flavoured milk, the thought makes me want to throw up!
Have you also heard the great news about how 'they' want to stick human genes in cows so that the cow's milk is similar to breast milk, and therefore better for everyone?!!!!

figures.
i thought cow's milk was already "perfect"!!!
I'm kidding of course. what hypocrites though.
People are realizing that its bad for them
so they change tactics and try to mimic what's
natural.
As an aside, I'm shocked by the amount of propaganda
that discourages woman from chosing breastfeeding vs.
formula. It's disheartening. I'm definately breastfeeding
when the time comes, I was reading a magazine today,
and was saddened by the women who were looked down
upon because they chose bf. can you believe this.

Cindy- what also gets me is that mothers are advised to give their babies whole cows milk at about one year of age, when instead they should be encouraged to breastfeed for as long as possible. This is something that you rarely see encouraged, strangely. I have seen lots of kids go from being healthy and glowing on breast milk, to being ruddy and grizzly and grumpy on their new main drink, cow's milk. I breastfed my son till 15 months and my daughter till 18 months. I think this time I will try to breastfeed till the age of 2, though every baby is different and all.
