View Full Version : First Timer Seeking "Health Conscious" Insurance

Hi everyone,

I am just now converting to full veganism after over a decade of being a self-defined vegetarian. I've always been healthy, but I feel better than ever now, in my second month. It was an intensive course in nutrition that prompted me to make this big step -- and it is a BIG step (although it is mostly in the form of paying even more attention to the fine print on packaging). I've had to respond to more questions, attacks and non-comprehending looks than ever before, but I take this as an amusing part of the lifestyle (that fully exercises the compassion ethic). At the same time, support from a group such as at VegFamily is absolutely necessary to keep on a steady course. Thanks to you all for just being there.

One change I am hoping to make is to find a health insurance coverage policy that would best suit my conditions. I am leery of policies that boast "4,000 hospitals nationwide", mainly because I do not trust standard medical treatments without the backing of a good nutritionist that understands vegan needs.

I was wondering if anyone might have some advice on how and where to look for a progressive, open minded, "health-conscious" health insurance policy.

Thanks for your help. Cheer!

Maybe I asked the wrong question :(

My situation is that I have lived overseas for 14 years and have never held insurance in the United States. I know absolutely nothing about selecting a policy. I was wondering if there are items to look for that might be associated with being vegan (i.e. is a nutrionist always covered, what if the nearest designated hospital insists on supplying dairy products, etc.)

I really haven't a clue what to look for or what to look out for. Maybe there is nothing special to look for.

If anyone has a comment, I would really appreciate the help.

In my experience, vegans are treated no differently by the health insurance system than omnis.

We have longed to find a health plan that took into account our lifestyle and gave us a break on health care. My husband has had health insurance for years and has never had to even see a doctor becuase he is so healthy. It sucks that he has to pay so much. But that's the way it is.

Sorry i can't be of more help.

Thanks Erin, that helps put the insurance issue into perspective.

BTW, your book Raising Vegan Children arrived in the mail today. I couldn't help but skim through it (for half an hour) and can't wait to sit down and absorb it cover to cover. It looks fantastic. Thank you so much.

I'm glad! Did it arrive in good condition? I want to make sure that shipping to Singapore works well. Let me know.
