Just out of curiosity, how often do you guys all eat out at restaurants with your kids (not vegetarian restaurants)?

I never have a problem finding something that I can eat on almost any menu. I can always get the cook to modify something for me if there is nothing else, but the options for the kids suck.

My husband's boss gave us a gift certifcate to the Olive Garden which we used last night & I was fine with a vegi pasta, however there is very little for the kids to eat. My kids do eat some dairy, but I definately do not want it to be the whole meal. The kids menus had chicken fingers with french fries, mac & cheese, cheese pizza, or spaghetti. My girls both don't care much for tomatoes, so the spaghetti was out. If I make it at home & go light on the sauce, it is okay, but the restaurant version is not usually to their liking. I vetoed the mac & cheese, & that left pizza, which they both ate.

However, the only toppings they had were black olives & mushrooms & there was no fruit available to put on the side. For desert, they were out of the berry pie - they only desert with fruit in it. That left ice cream, cheese cake, etc.

I hate feeding them bread & dairy for dinner w/ virtually no fruit or vegis. They are pretty good eaters at home, but especially my older one can be a bit picky as of late & the vegan choices for me are not things that they would eat. The only adult options for vegan foods were pasta w/ marinara or pasta w/ spicy red pepper sauce. Neither of my girls would eat either of those entrees.

There is always the option of not eating out or eating at a vegetarian restaurant (we have none in my town), but it is a bummer that the kids' choices are so limited and unhealthy at restaurants. We don't eat out all that much!

If I'm going to a restaurant where I know my daughter won't like anything, I pack a peanut butter and ajelly sandwich and give her that. But for the most part we avoid going to places that are too tough to order.

In Los Angeles we have a lot of veggie restaurants so we frequent those often. Though i will say that eating with Emily at a restaurant is very trying, so for the most part, she gets dropped off with Grammy and Papa and Steve and I go out alone. Ahhhh, alone time. ;)

I think you did the best you could with what was offered.
