i just felt like posting something kinda funny and dumb and kinda cool......

last night we brought my daughter to the toy store and when we were checking out as always there was lots of candy at the register. and as the cashier was ringing us up my daughter picked up a gummy sucker and asked daddy is this vegan??
and the cashier looked at her and said no honey that has gelatin in it. my daughter didnt say anything and just put it back and the only thing i could think of to say to the cashier at the time was impressive......most impressive.......

Wow! That is indeed impressive... very impressive. :) I'd say the cashier either was vegan herself (or himself?) or somehow knew quite a bit about veganism, perhaps through a vegan friend. I mean, I don't really think that gelatin not being vegan is a well-known fact in the mainstream... but who knows? I guess it's just another instance of "'vegan awareness' where [we] never expected to find it." ( http://vegfamily.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=278 )

(It's also rather impressive that the cashier knew there was gelatin in that candy without even having to check the ingredients. Sounds like (s)he might have had prior experience with that candy in that context...)

Out of curiousity, where was this? (State, if in the U.S.A.? City?)

First it is cool that your little one was mature enough to ask about the ingredients and then she put it back without making a fuss about not getting any candy!! I can't tell you how many children I see screaming about not getting candy or junk food when they are at stores! It is so annoying. Good job raising your daughter!

Second, it is so cool that the cashier already knew that the candy wasn't vegan! I love it when I meet other people who are vegan or know about the lifestyle. It just shows how it is spreading throughout the country. :0)

What's even funnier is when you explain what gelatin is to non-vegans and see the expression on their faces! I have even met veggies who eat gelatin b/c they didn't know where it really came from.

thanks .... i live in minneapolis

that is one thing im definately proud of my daughter about is that she always always asks if something is vegan before she eats it and will never make any kind of a fuss if something isnt. also she always asks other people why they are not vegan and talks to them and tells them that she thinks that it is sad that they are eating animals. its really quite funny because no self respecting adult can ever argue with her they just kind of sit there. she is alywas doing stuff like that.

My 3 YO son Caper will pick foods up in the store and ask.."does this have dairy in it mommy?"
If I say yes..he calmly puts it back..lol..and has even become the "police" of my older sons..lol..if they teasingly pick a food up that they know is a no-no..my 3YO will yell..thats dairy (his meaning for vegan) and YOU CANT HAVE IT! rofl
It does give you a warm feeling doesnt it??
