My family and I are about to embark on one year of being vegan for one year. Yeah us! Me-vegetarian for a long time, Husband-hunter who went vegetarian when he met me! and 2 children...
Anyways, my question is aspirin isn't vegan? what other medications are not vegan? I know that if it's in a capsule/geletain it isn't, but just plain aspirin? We practice homeopathy, but sometimes we need some acetominophin...
Are there anyother medications I should be aware of that are not? Pepto? Tums? just throwing out some names...any and all help would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Technically no medicine is vegan since the FDA requires animal testing on all drugs before they are approved.

As for animal ingredients, most over the counter medicines contain animal ingredients.

So what do vegans take/use when they need something? Depends. Some take the medications because there is no alternative for them. Some avoid the medications and try to do without. It's a personal decision.

I say use the meds if it's a life threatening situation. Try to avoid the meds if you can find alternatives for them.

My suggestion..and mind you its a suggestion only is to go to a local health food store where you can buy bulk herbs..and get some Feverfew and buy some vegan capsules to capsulate it to have on hand ( I also bought a "capsulator" so I dont have to do 1 capsule at a time). This is an excellent anti-inflamitory!!! We dont have anymore over the counter meds in the house..the feverfew will knock out a headach and MANY aches and pains quickly (quicker than tylenol or advil according to my family).

What a wonderful journey you and your family are about to take. Here's hoping your transition is smoothe ;)
