At my 6 week postpartum check-up my doctor gave me a prescription for the pill. It's the one that's safe to take while breastfeeding. Before I fill it, does anyone know if there's any question on it's safety? I could get by without it after all.

I've never heard of a "certain" birth control pill that is supposedly safe to use while breast feeding.

Beware of doctors telling you things you want to hear!

I had so many problems with hormones when I was younger, I went with a non-hormone IUD (copper T). It's working for us, but all birth control has potential side effects. I personally would be super wary of any level of birth control pill, just because I have the felt negative side effects.

We are concerned about becoming pregnant, because I had a hard time with Elle, and we were preventing when I became pregnant with her. Many people don't have to use birth control while breast feeding, however, I started my cycle 1month after she was born (even though I was exclusively nursing), otherwise I would have been inclined to try natural methods.
Good Luck, tough topic! ~Jenna

Hi! I don't know how safe any birth control pill would be, especially when breastfeeding. I personally would wait until I have finished nursing if I decided to go on the pill. I had taken the pill before, and I tried a few of them because of all the ongoing problems I had with them..(spotting, migraines etc.) After having so many problems my doctor prescribed me a very low dose pill (Alesse) and it gave me the most problems of all. I don't know which pill it is that your doctor considers 'safe', or just how mild it really is, but I would avoid it for now. That's my opinion/thoughts on that! Good luck!
Take care!

I think I will just skip it. With all the breastfeeding I do, that should povide pretty good protection on it's own, and coupled with natural methods (and condoms!), I should be covered. Thanks for the input,

FYI - frequent nightnursing has been shown to be the biggest factor in holding off mestruation...and keeping baby nearby (in same bed if possible) is the best method of keeping night nursings up. :)

It's safe to say that ALL hormone options will pass through your breast milk. Docs say they're safe because they usually are low-dose and they haven't discovered any long term problems Yet.

If you mind the small risk, you may want to try spermicidal films/inserts. You insert them, and need to wait a few minutes for the film to dissolve. I LOVED this because it made sure that we had plenty of foreplay time.
