I'm sure this isn't a surprise to anyone on these boards, but its nice to see coverage in the press ... even if they do seem amazed by the "possibility" that a strict vegetarian diet could reduce cholesterol as well as DRUGS:o

We just saw something about this on the news earlier tonight.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that if you don't eat cholesterol, it is difficult for you to have high cholesterol levels? Seems like common sense to me.

This article is just the same as the above, and I am surprised at both of them for (somewhat) recommending a vegeterian diet!! Slowly but surely times may change.....

Your body actually MAKES cholesterol. Even if you do not consume ANY cholesterol or trans fats whatsoever, you will still have some levels of cholesterol in your body. The problems arise when you have a family heritage whereby the body makes EXCESSIVE amounts of cholesterol. For those people, even eating an extremely restrictive diet will not totally control cholesterol levels.

I was aware of that. Cholesterol is only found in muscle tissue, human and animal. The majority of people with high cholesterol do not have that problem, though.
I think it is sad that most people don't realize that their problem is preventable through diet: They think it is something their body is doing. Of course there are people for whom cholesterol lowering medications are indicated, but even they can benefit from modification of their diet.

but even they can benefit from modification of their diet.
Oh, agreed. I bet 99% of the US population would benefit from a low-fat, plant-based diet. Even if people with hyperlipidemia (I think I spelled that right, LOL) do not see a reduction in their cholesterol levels, they certainly would notice a reduction in blood pressure, diabetes, diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, and a LOT of cancers!
