This question is mainly directed towards those with experience cloth diapering. What about wool covers??? I have only recently become a vegan, but I have two wool covers that I use mostly for nighttime since we are family bedders who don't enjoy waking up in a puddle. I don't know of any other natural substance that is waterproof. I do have some nylon covers, but I worry about synthetic fibers, because I read in an article that they can be carcinogenic, especially when wet against the skin. Are there any natural alternatives to wool?

Why not just use what you already have? I still wear leather shoes that I've had for *years*......when they are too worn out to wear anymore, *then* I will toss them out. Until then, I continue to use the resources I already have.
If you really want to get rid of the wool covers, there are sherpa or polar fleece covers, or diapers made of that material. It wicks the wetness real well.
hi, we use one disposable diaper per day, which is at bed time! If you choose not to go this route, I have heard that the fleece covers are really great (although they aren't a natural fiber - they feel much nicer that nylon/plastic covers). I also have heard mention of a gortex diaper cover (really pricey!), which is again not a natural fiber but breaths like wool or cotton would.

I confess that I have 2 wool over wraps that were passed on to me from my sister 7 years ago. They have lasted really well so I have continued to use them. I also have some little woollen baby clothes that I use as I hate synthetic fibres and our winters are pretty cold. I still feel happy calling myself vegan though (I know this discussion has happened before on the forums). I wouldn't buy new wool though, I just have reused things given to me. I use a lot of polar fleece too. It's warm and soft and repells moisture. One thing I refuse to use is PVC in any shape or form. It is what a lot of over-pants are made of, and it is very very toxic. It's also often used as a backing on bibs. Nasty stuff.

Try polar babies!! They are made from recycled pop bottles and ane a perfect alt. to wool!! They're at www.alternativebaby.com or at www.diapercovers.com They run a bit small, and are a bit expensive, but SO worth it. They are absolutely gorgeous, and I've never had a leak--you can fold a prefold lengthwise in fourths or widthwise in thirds and just lay it in the cover--no pins or snappis. If you babe is a VERY heavy wetter and you need to use a doubler or whatever, try Stacinators( www.stacinator.com ) They are bulky, but for nitetime it doesn't matter much. hope this helps!
