You will probably have to do some web searches on this, but here is a start:

I read somewhere that there was some study done where diabetics were given something pretty close to a vegan diet, and many of them no longer needed insulin or that their dependence on insulin was lowered. I don't remember where I saw this, but I know it was on a reputable site with real medical quotes and not a bunch of garbage someone made up.

You (or the diabetic in your family) could bring the article to your doctor and try to find out more information. You could also pose the insulin question to your doctor or pharmacist.

Good luck!

Insulin used today is no longer derived from animals. It is a human derivative, manufactured through recombitant RNA.

The study referred to by mystic princess is by PCRM. It was this particular study which convinced me to use the Vegan approach to control my diabetes.

PLEASE be aware, if you are an insulin-dependent diabetic, you MUST continue to use insulin. Your body no longer produces this valuable hormone, and you will die without it.

The study targets Type 2 diabetics, who do produce insulin, but their bodies have become insulin-resistant. Through exercise and weight loss and diet, many Type 2 diabetics can reduce or eliminate their need for medication.

Diabetes is never cured. It is only controlled.

For me being a vegan 6 wks, I have to still use my metformin or my sugars sky rocket. I eat sugar once in a blue moon but not a lot. I have dropped weight but very slowly. My husbands weight has tripled by mine. MEN.

I hope that I can be off meds soon too. But I am shocked at how resistant my body is to this change. It is hanging onto the sugars and fat big time. It is frustrating.

Check out the new book "Defeating Diabetes" by Brenda Davis, R.D. She claims that type 2 diabetes is a disease of lifestyle and eating habits...and that if the pancreas hasn't been completely exhausted, you CAN defeat diabetes through dietary/lifestyle changes. I've reserved the book at my library - the link between diet and chronic disease(s) sounds like interesting stuff to me:-)
