My ds's birthday is coming up and we are having some family over to celebrate. I want to have a cut up veggie platter for them to snack on but I'm not sure what to serve with the veggies. I usually just eat them plain or dipped in hummus, but most of them don't like hummus (found this out at last year's party:rolleyes: )

Any suggestions?

Some veggies taste good dipped in guacamole, specifically cucumber and I think carrot.

Or, get a vegan sour cream (or make one) and add onion powder and other herbs.

Or, do you get the Creamy Garlic dressing from Follow Your Heart in your area? It's just like a ranch dressing.

Do you have any vegan cookbooks with recipes for dips in them? Try some of those. I hope someone else has advice fo you. I usually use roasted red pepper hummus.

Thanks Erin!

I think I'll try the sour cream one.

I used this recipe for my daughter's birthday party and no one could tell the difference between it and sour cream one's they're used to:

I'm in LOVE with silken tofu!! Mori-Nu is Non-GMO (I believe).

There are lots of great dips if you do a search "vegan dips"

How about a salsa dip?
I also like to make hummous using beans other than chickpeas. One of my faves is using white beans (haricot), lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper, blend it in the blender. It's very different from chickpea hummous, very very creamy and delicious.

Yummy, sounds good! I love hummus and make it quite frequently...I want to start using other types of beans too. I'm going to try kidney beans.

My daughter's BF's mom brings a Vegetarian layered Dip to any family gathering, and I recently made a Vegan-converted version of it.

In a square pan, or a 9X13 roasting pan, if you are making it for a crowd, layer from bottom to top:

A layer of Vegan refried beans
A layer of reconstituted taco-seasoned TVP (optional)
A layer of either Vegan sour cream flavored with taco seasoning, or soft silken tofu blended with a small amount of lemon juice, and then flavored with taco seasoning
A layer of diced onions
A layer of avocado, mashed or diced, with additional lemon juice to keep from darkening
A layer of diced tomatoes
A layer of shredded lettuce
A layer of shredded cheddar-flavor Vegan-Rella
Decorate with sliced black olives

Serve with corn chips or tortilla strips

This is so good, I can eat it for BREAKFAST, LOL!

One of the layers can be a jar of salsa, as hot as you want it to be.

I shouldn't have posted that recipe. I might have to make a batch just for me this weekend!!

Great recipe idea! I alter a lot of recipes, but haven't tried that one yet. What brand of vegan sour cream do you use?

I already had everything on hand to try your French onion dip, so I decided to whip some up tonight. Wow! It's great! Thanks for hooking me up with that one. My husband is "picky, picky, picky" and he gave it the thumbs up review, too!
Lot's of great recipes on this site... Keep it comin' people!!!:D

I made your layered dip and served it this afternoon. YUM-YUM!
I left out the cheese substitute (usually never use it) and also the avacado (two in the family don't care for it). I added the layer of salsa, and as a personal addition (my plate only or everyone would scream) I added some finely diced jalapenos. YEE-HAW! What a great thing! ~Annie
P.S. Thanks again:D

Thanks for the layered dip recipe! I brought it to a party yesterday, and the pan was completely empty within an hour (and the recipe really makes a lot). Everyone loved it. Thanks for the idea.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the dip recipe! Now you know why I ask my daughter's BF's mom to bring it to EVERY get-together! I take the pan of dip, a bag of chips, and sit in the corner and DARE anyone to grab it out of my hands!

The recipe is very flexible, you can use what you like, and also use whatever is on hand.

To Sheree: the brand of soy sour cream I use is Soymage. I don't care for it straight, like on a baked potato, but it's wonderful in recipes!

Another sour cream a lot of vegans use is Tofutti's Better Than Sour Cream. It has refined sugar in it though, be warned. But it's better than Soymage in my opinion.

As a whole, I'm very underimpressed with Soymage. And the only Tofutti product I've ever tried are the little "ice cream" sandwiches, "Tofutti Cuties."

Now THOSE are outstanding. I have to fight my kids off to get any for myself!

I can't find too many Tofutti products near me, though. That breaks my heart, because I hear Tofutti "ice cream" is great.

Soymage won't set the world on fire, but in a seasoned recipe, it will suffice.

I blended Mori Nu tofu with taco seasoning in that recipe, and it was great. I could have used it as a dip in itself.

VOW, finally tried the layered dip - its great! And a big hit with dh. He even requested that I make it for his "food day" at work!

GREAT news on the success of the dip! Now you will be forever known as the "Layered Dip Lady" and you'll be asked to bring it to parties forevermore.

VOW- would it wreck the recipe if I left out the vegan cheese? We can't get vegan cheese here:(

Sure, you can leave out the "cheese." I prefer it WITH "cheese" but it's not critical.

The fun part of cocking is to customize recipes so that they are YOURS, LOL!
