I had heard that soy milk, powders, and tofu contain excess estrogen, and therefore would be detrimental to a male vegan to use for body training purposes. I had also heard soy products lacked certain amino acids. Anyone know if there is any truth to all this?

i also heard that consuming soy made men behave like sissies, but i think it's all rubbish. i dunno about the estrogen bit, but if you want to make sure you are consuming the right amino acids, i'd suggest eating a wide range of plant proteins like legumes and other grains instead of just depending on soy alone.

If I understand the literature correctly a person would have to consume truckloads of soy to get too much estrogen.
Soy is the only plant food, if I recall correctly, that contains all the amino acids necessary to humans.

What about quinoa. I understand it has a complete amino acid profile as well.

Is Soy Dangerous?:

After reading everything I could find about the subject, for myself I concluded to continue enjoying soy foods. But its only a part of a wide and various diet.
The idea that it could be harmful to men because of the plant estrogens doesn't make sense. If that were true, wouldn't many Asian civilizations have been wiped out?
However, I stick to unprocessed soy (I don't consider tofu to be processed anymore than cheese or bread) as I prefer unprocessed food anyway.
I am a bit concerned about the manufacture of some soy milk, but as with most things its better to make it at home.

Nonsense!! My husband is a vegan who eats alot of soy, and is very virile and manly, with big, strong muscles, and is not growing breasts! The soy plant is a very complete food- I think nature designed it for our bodies, men and women, but you should get protein from many different sources, not just one thing, whether it's soy, beans, or any other protein source. Variety is the key! The real question should be about all of those hormones in meat which can make women and men big and fat, and has been linked to early menstruation in children, more painful (and early) menopause, and has even been linked to causing women to grow facial hair! That is what we should be worried about!

I took an adolescent psychology class in college. This guy in my class said that a family friend had an 8 year old daughter who started getting her period. They somehow traced it back to the hormones in the milk she was drinking. After they took her off milk, her period went away.

That was probably from the BGH ( bovine growth hormone ) It is also what causes there to be pus in milk ( white cells go to repair tears in the udder caused by it being filled with 20 times the amount of milk that nature intended, thus milk now has an actual pus (white cel )count.)
