We are in the Poconos vacationing, and will be leaving tomorrow morning. Sarah had a little cough the past couple of days, but this morning she woke up with this scary sound like she can't breathe when she's coughing. I'm concerned that it could be whooping cough. She was vaxed until 9 mnths when we decided not to vax anymore. If anyone knows any info. about whooping cough or Dr's in the Poconos that aren't going to flip out about us not vaxing, please help...

The only thing I remember reading about W.C. was to put them in the bathroom with the hot shower running, and also to drive them around in the car with the windows rolled down.
If you have internet access, i'd start doing searches on W.C. and see what the home treatments are.
Good luck and sorry she is sick. That's no fun!

i'm so sorry about your daughter getting the whooping cough...anyway i searched up an aromatherapy book and found this...
1. Food-give her food that are non-mucus forming, make ice lollies and sorbets with natural, diluted fruit juices and let her have them. they'll be soothing. cut out sweets, additives, preservatives of any kind and give only herb teas, mineral water and pure fruit juices.
2.Vitamin C helps. So try to give multi-vitamins, mineral tablets and zinc supplements(Don't look at me, i'm just quoting the book)
3.Let her have plenty of fresh air, but make sure she's well wrapped up and put bowls of hot steaming water in the room at night to keep it as humid as possible which will avoid dehydration of the bronchial tract.
And then there's the essential oils to use. Blend ten drops each of Hyssop oil, Thyme Vulgaris and cinnamon oil and put three drops of the oil blend into a bowl of hot water which you leave in the room. Do this three times a day.
Blend five drops each of red thyme, Niaouli, Lavender and hyssop essential oils and dilute the whole blend in 30ml of sweet almond oil and massage her chest with the oil night and day.
I think you'll need to find an aromatherapist to get the oils...maybe she can even help you find the right mixes to treat the whooping cough...good luck...i hope she gets well soon.

steamy air is good, but better with a couple drops of eucalyptus oil, or something mentholated.

Thanks, everyone. Sorry I didn't get to respond right away. They were charging us 20 cents/minute for internet access at our condo.
Anyway, just to update, it turns out that Sarah most likely has croup, not whooping cough (I think I was just being paranoid). We talked to our family doctor and described her symptoms and he was pretty sure it sounded like croup. We read some stuff about it and some of the same remedies were suggested, such as steam treatment. So we've been doing that, and yesterday was when Sarah hit rock bottom--102 degree fever and listlessness. She slept most of the day and night off and on, and we were able to keep her drinking fluids and we used the vaporizer in our bedroom at night. Croup's symptoms are supposed to peak on day two or three, so I think that was the worst of it. She's doing a lot better now-- fever's down, she's more active and eating and drinking normally. Thanks for your reassurance...

so glad she's doing better. It's so miserable for little ones when they're sick!
