View Full Version : Pre-Soy advice
Hi - It's been a while since I've posted
Our son is 7 1/2 months now. We've been feeding him his fruits and veggies for about 2 months now. He's liked everything he's tried, apples, bananas, avocadoes, peaches, prunes, lentils, carrots, etc. I've been told (and I agree) that we shouldn't give him any soy products untill he's about a year old due to possible allergies. (He's currently breast-feeding). He doesn't have any teeth yet.
I'm curious to know what everyone else has fed their young ones around this time (between 8-12 months). Have you just focused on fruits and veggies? Are there any other foods that are safe to give them besides lentils?
Thanks for the advice.

Sounds like you're doing great! Any solid food introduced in the first year is more of an introduction - kind of Solid Foods 101.:) Breastmilk is still his best nutrition!

Yes, I would avoid soy for the first year. You're doing great.
Thanks for the advice and encouragement. Our DS had a stomach virus this week. lots of diarrhea and two very unhappy parents. Went back to the dr. today and they said the 'bug' which is going around should disappear soon. He's been living on apples, rice and bananas. But he's got his smile back which we haven't seen in a while.

my ds wasn't interested in much aside from the breast at that age. But, I tried! He DID like avacadoes and bananas and sweet potatoes. Avoiding soy for that first year is a good idea. And then remember everything in moderation. :) Also, if he likes lentils how about trying mushed white beans? We also gave him 1 tsp of flax oil daily too.

He's starting to feel better. We gave him peaches this morning with oatmeal. Once we know his stomach is much better from the virus and he hasn't had any diarrhea, we're going to give him some other beans. Navy and others and see how that goes.
Flax oil? I've heard different things about it. Some say it's good and others say it's toxic. One book we have says a lactating mom shouldn't have too much flax as it's not good for the baby. Anybody have any info on this?

**I've NEVER been told or heard that flax is toxic. I believe the Dr. Sears (askdrsears.com) has information on giving flax oil and I've even been told by my pediatrician about the benefits of flax. As I said, we are never sick. My son, who had every chance to be sick, has never had but ONE runny nose. And although he's a super skinny baby (just 23lbs at 22months) he's very bright and agile for his age. I truly think flax has helped us all achieve this level of over all health. The dosage is 1tbs per 100lbs. just my 2cnts! :)
Interesting. At what age did you start giving him the flax oil? I'll have to check out his website. We have his book but I haven't looked in it for info regarding flax oil.
Our baby is 16lbs 5oz (lost a little weight last week due to the virus). He'll be 8months on the 25th.

**I started giving him flax around 7 months. Before that he really had nothing aside from breastmilk.

Doug - remember that the lentil family is most easily digested and doesn't taste as "beany" so make sure to try all of the different lentils. Dal is a great baby-friendly dish. I make it with yellow lentils.

Oh, one more thing my picky babe DID like was coconut milk. Blend it up w/ a banana yyyyyyuuuummmy! It's full of good baby friendly fat too!
PikkuMyy - I love Dal at the Indian Restaurant. How do you make it at home? Different types of lentils? You mean pink, yellow, green and brown?
Edamommy - Coconut milk sounds interesting.
