My twins are now 10 months. They've been eating Baby's Best organic fruits and veggies, rice cereal, oatmeal, organic soy formula and are breastfed twice a day. I want to expand their diets a bit and was wondering about a simple lentil soup for them. Should I just make plain lentils or add carrots or other veggies as well? Puree the entire thing? For reheating, just plop into into a saucepan right with a little extra water? We don't use a microwave. Any other suggestions for 10 month olds?

Lentil Stew
25g dried red lentils
1 small potato, peeled and cubed
1/2 tsp tomato purée or tomato juice
1 small carrot, cubed

Place all ingredients in saucepan and just cover with water. Bring to the boil slowly and simmer until all liquid is absorbed and vegetables are softened. Cool a little and blend until smooth and creamy.

:) my son really liked this when he was a babe, and he hates just about everything.

Yum! Sounds great! I'm going to make this for my 9-month old. Thanks! :)
My partner got me the the "Fresh Baby" baby food making kit and I'm loving it! It's great to make a batch of food and freeze it into individual servings for later use! I'll use the freezer trays when I make the lentil stew. I highly recommend the kit:

You can also just buy the freezer trays from them, for those who don't need the cookbook and video.

I used to puree every nutritious soup I made for my babies, but those two were their favorites :

Cream of Broccoli and Carrot (quick to make)

• 2 tsp olive oil
• 1 cup onions, in big pieces
• 1 clove of garlic
• 1 l/2 cups vegetable broth
• 1 potato, in chunks
• 2 cups soy milk (or less)Ble
• salt & pepper
• 1 cup broccoli, in chunks
• 1 cup carrots, in chunks

Sauté onion and garlic in olive oil for 5 minutes. Add all other ingredients except soy milk, cover and cook for 10 to 15 minutes more. Puree in blender and add the milk. Reheat on stove if eaten immediately.

* I put less soy milk if it was to be frozen for my sons, for a thicker consistency.

Claudette's Soup

• 1 cup diced onions
• 2 big garlic cloves
• 1 cup carrots, diced
• 1 cup yam, diced
• 19 oz or 1 can red kidney beans, rinced
• 6 to 8 cups vegetable broth
• 1/4 cup pasta shells (rice, wheat or other)
• 1/2 to 1 cup broccoli florets
• 3 tbs olive oil

Sauté oignon and half the garlic in olive oil, on medium heat.
Add carrots and cook 4 minutes on medium/low heat. Add yam, kidney beans, broth and water. Cook about 15 minutes.

Raise heat and add the shells - cook to "al dente".
Add the broccoli florets and cook 2 minutes more. Add the rest of the garlic and serve.

* I would first puree everything but the broth in the blender, then added broth to the desired consistency. I would keep the broth in the freezer to add to other purees I made.

Et voilà !

Do babies have problems with digesting onion and/or garlic? I was thinking that it might be a bit rough for their 10-month old digestive systems.

Mine never had any problems with that but of course, you are the best judge for your own child and should adapt if you feel it's best. You may want to not put in the onions and garlic at first and over time include them gradually. Same thing for the kidney beans.
