Sitting down to dinner at our favourite Thai restaurant and who is seated at the table next to us? That group you always hate to be sitting next to. The people who have nothing of interest to say but insist on saying everything loudly enough for every table in the restaurant to hear.

So this foursome starts reading the menu.

"Oh. Look 'Amazing Tofu' (tofu in a peanut satay sauce that is to die for delicious). If it's tofu how amazing can it be. Gr-oss!" Followed by loud laughter from their table and a derisive snort from my daughter who is busily devouring her plate of Amazing Tofu!

next comment:

Goof1 "Macrobiotic food? What the he-- is that?"

Goof2 "You know. Food from Micronesia."

Goof3 "No ... it's the stuff that those vee-gans (rhymes with cans) eat."

Goof4 "I don't know. Would vee-gans eat shrimp?"

Goof3 "Sure. I mean it isn't like shrimp are animals or anything."

I could barely finish my dinner for wanting to just bust out laughing!

I don't think I would have been able to prevent myself from calling out "actually shrimp ARE animals and vegans don't eat them" (I mean, THEY were the ones who started talking so loud that everybody else could hear), that way they'd know that shrimps are indeed animals AND the correct pronunciation of "vegan" :p
edited to add: I just realized though that doing that would have made it even harder to prevent bursting out laughing!:p

Uh... yeah... me too. But first I need to go an' water those fish trees...

Honestly, people do indeed say the dumbest things sometimes... I've lost count of how many times I've gotten the "oh... but surely you at least eat fish, don't you?" comment, upon telling someone that I am vegan.

(Most likely the worst comment I've ever gotten: "What? But... fish are plants, aren't they?" And no, she wasn't kidding!)

Along the lines of this thread, here's my mom's brilliant comments *disclaimer: my mother is a compulsive liar*

We're at a great local veggy restaurant on Friday and she says she only wants to order "real" food so she orders a falafel. The waitress asks her if she wants onion rings or fries with that. She aks, "Are the onion rings real?" The waitress gives her an odd look and tells her yes so she orders them. The waitress left and I told my mom that onions are vegan and asked her what she meant by fake onion rings. My mom says that she knows they make fake onion rings with soy and she doesn't eat those. I asked her where she ever saw onion rings made from soy. Her usual response, "I just did!"

Was she talking about "Funyuns"? Those puffy snack ring things that come in bags like potato chips?

Nope, she was lying about some imaginary product made from soy that pretends to be onion rings.

What does she do when you call her on her lies.
I'm also curious if you trust her with your kids. Would she lie about slipping them something that you would not allow?

She makes up other lies. For example: on Friday, I asked her if didn't she think that my son looked a bit like my brother who died last year. She said that there was absolutely no resemblance. Yesterday, at the get together after my brother's unveiling (Jewish ceremony where they have a graveside service and present the tombstone), she tells someone, "Here's LIttle Michael (my brother), they look just alike."

My mother has seen my kids for a total of about 20 hours in almost 15 months. She lives 1,000 miles away which is very comforting. I would never trust her with my kids. She got angry at me and my husband because my husband told a story how he was at this veggy restaurant alone with the kids months ago and he had to use the bathroom so he was bundling them in their car seats to bring with him. A total stranger, sitting by the door, offered to watch them while he went to the bathroom. He declined and the woman got very upset with him for not trusting him. My mother agreed with this lady and said that my husband should have trusted her and let her watch the kids! I told my mom that I wouldn't let my husband near the kids if he had let her watch them and my mom got angry at me then.

Sorry for the rant, I am somewhat used to having a completely dysfunctional family but it gets me very upset still. :(

If anyone is entitled to a rant...sounds like it's YOU! My goodness. I sure feel for you!
