Campbell's vegan products

Here is a list that the Campbell's company sent me of the few vegan items that they produce:

"Enclosed is a list of the vegetarian products that we offer.

Campbell's Tomato Juice
Pace Picante Sauce
Pace Thick & Chunky Salsa
R&W Vegetarian Vegetable Soup
Soup At Hand Classic Tomato Soup
Swanson Vegetable Broth
V8 Juice
V8 Splash Juice

Thank you for visiting the Campbell Soup web-site.

Campbell Soup Web Team"

"Unfortunately, our Red & White Tomato Soup is not considered vegetarian because it contains flavoring. Many of our soups have flavoring included in the ingredients. The term "flavoring" refers to the oils or extracts that are obtained from spices and herbs. "Flavoring" may also include onion or garlic derivatives, as well as flavor derived from fruits, vegetables and their juices, or edible parts of plants. Other sources may include meat, seafood, poultry or dairy products, whose significant function in the food is flavoring rather than nutrition.

We hope this information is helpful to you. We appreciate feedback like yours because it helps us become aware of consumer preferences and concerns."

Tell me about it! If I don't know the product is vegan and it says "natural flavor" I usually don't buy it. Why can't they just tell you what the heck the "flavor" is derived from???? I mean shouldn't we all have the right to know what we're eating? Since when is "natural flavor" an ingredient? I can't just go to the store and buy some bottled "natural flavor." In today's world of allergies, it should be required to be more specific, don't you think?

It drives me crazy that food manufacturers are not required to fully disclose what they're putting into the products they sell. For some people this causes an ethical issue, but for others it's literally life and death. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (www.cspinet.org) tackles the "natural flavors" issue on a regular basis and The Vegetarian Legal Action Network has been trying since 1999 to get the FDA to require food manufacturers to expose what their "natural flavors" really are - check out their campaign and the petition they sent to the FDA:

Hee, well I can't stand the natural flavours bit though, it's so...vague...but really, since Coca-cola can state that their stuff is 'of non-animal origin', would it hurt other food companies to use up a little more ink and paper and AT LEAST do the same thing too?
