A Turning of the Tables

A few weeks ago a friend went away for a few weeks and so her kids came here for sleepovers a couple of nights. Her kids are 11 and 6 and are both vegetarians. We also invited the 6 year-old boy that lives a few doors down to stay over too. The first morning at breakfast the 11 year-old girl says to the neighbour kid, "You know...you're the only one here who eats meat". Followed by a "So, what vegetables do you like to eat?" Apparently, the boy only eats chickens and potatoes, which just invited more comments. It final got to the point that my dh had to step in and say, "Leave the kid alone".

I love the neighbour boy. He's very sweet and likes to write books about puppies, but I do have to admit I was a wee bit enjoying the show.

voice of the vegan toddlers

My son (soon to be 3 in October) has begun asking people (like MY Uncle!), "Does your mom say it is okay to eat eggs?" and "Are they good for your body?" It cracks me up to see how people respond. Some get pretty defensive being interregated by a 2 yr. old!

He has also told people, "We don't drink cow milk, we drink GOOD milk."

If these kids are already making people think about their eating habits (sometimes to the embarassment of their parents, I must admit!), just think of the positive change they will bring about as they get older and even more influential! (although I think he only gets away with some of his comments because he IS a cute 2 yr old!)

Bella: I don't think that the neighbour boy actually realized that chicken comes from chickens, as crazy as that sounds. I have noticed that he is catching on to the whole notion of what it means to be vegan. He was over again this afternoon and he made a point of telling my son that he rescued a cricket earlier that morning. He is a very, very sweet and sensitive boy and I wouldn't be surprised if one day he told he parents that he wants to be a vegetarian too. Only, that just leaves potatoes on the list of foods that he'll eat.

Mer'sMom: It is so insprining to watch a young vegan child try educate others about the joys of veganism. My son truly loves being a vegan and he's been such a positive influence on those around him. Every day he fills my heart with pride.
