Interviews

Ed Begley, Jr.: Actor and environmentalist.

Can you tell us what kind of car you drive? How long have you had it? And does it require more or less maintenance than a gas-guzzling car?
I drive the EV-1, from General Motors. It requires very little maintainance....all of it paid for by GM.

When did you switch to a vegan diet and what prompted the change?
I became a vegan in 1970, but it was too hard back then, filming on distant locations, etc. I strayed for a while, but never ate red meat, of course.

I became a full vegan again in 1992, and haven't looked back.

Ed Begley, Jr.How did your friends and family react to your shift towards environmentalism?
I was met with some sketicism, but lately a lot of folks are interested, with gas prices so high and a lot of attention focused on global climate change.

What advice do you have for families to help them make an environmental impact in their own community and daily lives?
Change your transportation mode as much as you can. Ride a bike, take public transportation, WALK!

What are some of your favorite vegan foods and/or favorite vegan restaurants in town?

I eat at "Real Food Daily" and "Newsroom" when I'm on the other side of the hill, but in the valley, I like "Leonore's" on Moorpark and Whitset in Studio City.
But, mostly I cook vegan at home.

Do you get an opportunity to talk to children about the environment? If so, how do they generally react to all you have to tell them?
Thay are always facinated by the electric car, the solar panels, the whole lifestyle.

I often give tours to students.

How fast does your car go and how often does it need to be recharged?
It has a governor that keeps it down to 80mph. Without that, it has been clocked at 193mph. It takes 2-4 hours to recharge, depending on how far down the batteries are.

Do you think the people of Earth will adopt a more environmentally friendly approach to living before it's too late to save the planet and its people?
Yes. I am quite hopeful.

Who are some of the people you feel are making a real difference in the world today?
Paul Hawken, Andy Lipkis, John Robbins, Ralph Nader, to name but a few.

What's in store for Ed Begley, Jr. in the next 10 years? What can we expect?
I am quite busy raising my 10 month old baby girl. That's a full time job.
