If it comes down to it and I need pain relief during labor, which would be safer for my baby, a narcotic in my IV or an epidural?

Answer:

Without question, an epidural, administered as late in labor as possible. Narcotics like Demerol and morphine find their way across the placenta and create a higher risk of depressing breathing in the baby.
