The Vegan ViewVegFamily readers reply: Article continues below Jack: It is amazing to me with all the knowledge in the world that no one has an answer of what the appendix is suppose to do. If the scientist will stop looking at the meateaters, they might find the answer. Is the appendix a sack or what does it resemble? Tandi: I must first admit that I do not believe in evolution. But for those who do, where is the proof that ancient humans did not have an appendix? Does Darwin have photographs or any evidence or proof of this claim that he makes? No. The appendix is the 'immune system' of the intestinal tract. It contains immune cells and is necessary for the health of the digestive tract. It was only recently that researchers have figured out that the appendix does actually have a purpose....imagine that. I wouldn't believe any claim unless the individual has proof of that claim. Darwin made many claims for which he had no solid proof of, it was mostly his ideas and beliefs about the world. It is interesting but not scientific fact. In fact appendicitis is caused by a low fiber, processed food diet. We need to eat a high amount of plant based foods to prevent problems with the appendix so whether or not ancient humans had an appendix is really irrelevant. We have one now and in order to keep our intestines moving fiber and plant foods are the only way to do it. Joan: The appendix is a necessary organ. Just because we have yet to understand what function it serves we should not assume that we know everything and regard it as unnecessary.
