Why Did You Go Vegan?

Cassandra

I used to be a real meat-lover. I mean the kind that had ham and bacon for breakfast, a bologna and turkey sandwich for lunch, and 3 steaks for dinner. I was also a big fan of eggs, chocolate milk, ice cream, cheese, and all that stuff. I had once tried going vegetarian when my sister did (she's a vegan today), but that fell apart when my parents bought a box of filet mignon... I never thought I would be vegetarian. That is, until one day...

I was happily munching on a piece of turkey ham (you know, that stuff that tastes like ham, but is really turkey?) whilst checking my email. It wasn't the best turkey ham I'd had, but I kept on munching. Then I found a piece which was rather uncooked and bloody. Then I found what appeared to be a human fingernail. I nearly threw up! It might have just been a piece of bone from the turkey or something, but at that moment, I was absolutely positive it had to have come from a human being. I threw away the now very disgusting meat and continued my on with my day rather normally (except for the nightmare about finding a whole human finger in my balogna). I couldn't (and still can't) look at meat without becoming naseous. Needless to say, I dropped meat cold turkey (this pun always gets tied into these stories somehow, huh?)

Sometime within the next few days, I decided to make some scrambled eggs. We used to get our eggs from a local egg farmer. Imagine my surprise (and disgust) when one of the eggs has a double yolk, and one of those yolks is completely bloody! I screamed (not sure why... natural reaction I suppose) and had to wash the bloody egg off my hand while my 2 older siblings (one of them my sister who either was or very shortly after became vegan) who had run into the kitchen when they heard me scream poked at the egg until it slipped down the drain. So, now I don't eat meat, eggs, or fish (I've never liked any fish except tuna, which was rather easy to give up). Now the only thing standing in my way of going vegan is dairy. This obstacle was quickly eliminated when we discovered that our milk had curdled, and had been in this state for a day or two.

So there you have it! My mom still nags me about spending so much time reading labels when we go shopping, but with 2 vegans in the house, the amount of meat, eggs, and dairy products consumed has dropped dramatically. I've also lost a lot of weight that I didn't know I had, my allergies are half of what they used to be, and I hardly get sick anymore! If veganism was measured in Jedi ranks, I'd still be a major padawan, but at least I'm not eating meat 3 1/2 meals a day ^_^.

^_^ Love & Peace ^_^
