Why Did You Go Vegan?

Steve

I was raised on the typical American diet, eating animals at least once a day. Eventually I decided to try a vegetarian diet for 30 days while in college, just to see what it was like. I lost weight, gained a lot of energy, and felt better about myself in so many ways. Before the 30 days were up, I knew I'd never eat animals again.

Even though I became a vegetarian for health reasons originally, I later grew more aware of the ethical reasons for vegetarianism. I've always pushed myself to grow as a person, and I knew deep down that veganism was a more evolved way of eating. Eventually I developed the character strength necessary to make the decision to go vegan after being a vegetarian for several years. That was undoubtedly one of the best decisions I ever made.

Of course there are many different reasons to be a vegan, and all of them apply to me now. My increasing self-esteem and self-awareness have been directly related to the removal of animal products from my diet. I find it amusing that people think of going vegan as "giving up" something, when it's really the opposite. So much life, health, and inner development are sacrificed in order to eat animal products. I've found it so much easier to live in a way that's consistent with my inner values. Everyone knows deep down that it's wrong to cause animals to suffer unnecessarily, but so few develop the character strength to act on that inner wisdom.
